Russian Grammar: Exclamation

Definition: Exclamations express strong sentiments and feelings; a regular exclamation mark comes at the end of exclamations.

Notes:

  • There is a tendency to use exclamation mark is more frequently in Russian than in English language.
  • An exclamation mark may appear in the middle of a sentence.

Examples:

  • I'm very happy! So I will play a video game.

  • Я очень счастлив! так что я буду играть в видеоигру.

  • YA ochen schastliv! tak chto ya budu igrat v vidyeoigru.

  • She feels so bitter and wretched! It was worse than any illness.

  • Она чувствует себя так горько и несчастный! Это было хуже, чем любая болезнь.

  • Ona chuvstvuet sebya tak gorko i neschastnyi! Eto bylo huzhe, chem lyubaya bolezn.

  • I called you! But you didn't answer.

  • Я назвал вас! Но вы не ответили.

  • YA nazval vas! No vy ne otvetili.

  • You must stop listening to this music! It’s awful.

  • Вы должны перестать слушать эту музыку! Это ужасно.

  • Vy dolzhny perestat slushat etu muzyku! Eto uzhasno.

Exclamations are also used in commands expressed other than by a grammatical imperative.

Examples:

  • Shut up!

  • Заткнись!

  • Zatknis!

  • Listen to me!

  • Послушай меня!

  • Poslushai menya!

  • Follow me!

  • Следуйте за мной!

  • Sleduite za mnoi!

  • Oh my God!

  • О Боже мой!

  • O Bozhe moi!
